Malvern RFC fielded a total of 36 players in a trial game of four 20 minute sessions against Burton last Saturday. With Burton using a much smaller unit, it took the first two sessions for Malvern to gel, but by the final quarter some useful patterns emerged to aid the selection team in choosing a squad for the opening warm up game at Weston Super Mare this weekend.
Director of Rugby David Robins said “It was a useful exercise, especially as we have had such an influx of new players in the close season. It also gave us an introduction to the new Experimental Law Variations in force this season. Burton took the honours in terms of scoring, but the main point of the day was to look at as many players as possible to assess their potential for the upcoming league campaign.
We travel to Weston on Saturday still short of several players due to holiday commitments, but with two more games after that, we are confident that we will be in good shape for our opening league match at home to Luctonians on 13th September. Meanwhile our seconds are away to Brecon this Saturday, which will prove good opposition for Henry O’Brien’s lads”.
Robins also announced another new signing as local player Cameron Pimlow joins, having previously been at Worcester Academy and Dudley Kingswinford. “Cameron is a class act and misses the Weston game because he has been selected by the county to play in an under 20 game against Leinster on Saturday. He will be a valuable addition to the club. We still need to sign more prop forwards – in common with many clubs we are a bit thin on the ground in that area, especially as we have had two retirements with Matt Richardson and Steve Cooper hanging up their boots and Shaun Lancett returning to Upton to finish his career where he started.”
