Swanage & Wareham rugby players travelled to league leaders Maidenhead last Saturday, and despite a much-changed side defeated the home side.
The hosts were first onto the scoreboard with a penalty after five minutes, but five minutes later a penalty to Swans took them into the Maidenhead 22. With a catch and drive move Swans pushed the Maidenhead pack backwards, before releasing the ball to the backs when fly half Charlie Parish dummied his way over the try line. He added the extras to leave Swans 3 – 7 ahead. With 20minutes gone as Swans attacked Charlie Parish slotted a drop goal to give Swans a seven points lead. Swans were having much of the better of the play and on the half hour a move along the backs had Swans’ winger Jason Chadwick collecting the ball to score in the corner (3 – 15) .Maidenhead were not particularly impressive for a team leading the table, and just before the interval as Swans mounted another attack the ball was chipped over the advancing defenders, and once again Jason Chadwick won the race for the ball to score his second try of the game. Charlie Parish added the conversion as Swans went into the break leading 3pts – 22pts.
Swans expected a backlash from Maidenhead, and they were not disappointed. A penalty took the hosts to within 5 metres of the Swans’ try line and with a catch/drive move Maidenhead reduced Swans advantage to 8pts- 22pts. However, five minutes later a series of phases by Swans forwards had Swans’ flank forward Audie Jones forcing his way over the Maidenhead try line, for his first try for Swans 1st XV this season, to put Swans ahead once again by 8pts – 27pts.The home side came back with another catch/drive move scored in the corner to reduce the lead to 13pts-27pts
Charlie Parish failed with a penalty attempt and Swans were then put under severe pressure, and with 12 minutes to go Maidenhead scored with a converted try to take the score to 20 – 27. With time running out once again a penalty to Maidenhead gave them a catch/drive effort in the corner to take the score to 25pts – 27pts. The conversion was missed, but Swans hung on to give them the five league points, which could save them from the threat of relegation.
